In addition to the win/win provided by the electricity generated from the sun and the intensive farming, Fiddlehead Farms will provide a series of education campaigns including the importance of sustainability, biochar, beekeeping, grafting etc…
IMPORTANCE OF BEEKEEPING
Fiddle Head Farms will provide public demonstrations on the importance of beekeeping to the worldwide food chain. The bees will be an integral part of pollinating the newly grafted sparkleberry/blueberry bushes.
PRODUCE AND INCORPORATE BIOCHAR
In 2018, biochar was recognized as a net negative carbon emissions technology by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In addition to increasing crop yields and mitigating climate change, biochar can reduce nutrient leaching and increase soil water retention.
SUSTAINABLY TRANFORM NATIVE SPECIES
The property has a plethora of native Sparkleberry bushes that are highly compatible for grafting cultivated blueberries. The native Sparkleberry is a wild relative of the cultivated blueberry and is adapted to soils like Fiddle Head Farms without additional soil amendments or fertilizers.
